Michael Matzko is a photographer and artist residing in Cincinnati, OH. His lifelong journey via the arts explores finding personal and historical meaning in the work defined by how that is interpreted by the viewer. He utilizes techniques found throughout the history of the visual arts but also incorporates external factors which come from a much larger global history. He is most intrigued by the stories and perceptions we have and how that impacts views of the world globally, culturally and politically, exposing each person's idea of their own reality.
He has a somewhat unusual route in the industry, starting with an early career as a contemporary music composer and trombonist performing jazz, classical and pop music in orchestras, clubs and concerts halls throughout the east coast and midwest. He studied at the Berklee School of Music and received a Bachelors of Music at the University of Maryland focusing on music composition. While working on his Masters of Fine Art at the University of Iowa, he began work in video multi-media production. This was followed by research, while becoming a certified Alexander Technique teacher, on human behavior and habitual patterns, both physical and mental. During this entire time, he worked various jobs which trained him in both business, operations and computer systems which led to a parallel an IT career working for multiple companies, managing global development CRM and Marketing teams for several decades. He still consults part time as he pursues his artistic endeavors full time.
Michael began photographing images that captured his imagination around the age of 10 years old with his old Brownie camera. Bitten by the bug, he worked with film and darkroom processes in high school and college shooting Olympus and Nikon gear. As he travelled across the globe, he was able to photograph people in a varieties of culture throughout Asia and Europe which furthered his interest in storytelling. In the mid 2000’s, he started a more traditional path, when he started photographing sports for semi-professional soccer and high school teams as well as events and senior portraits. However, he was given an opportunity by the Heyman Talent Agency to start shooting their fresh faces which opened a whole new view into portraits and eventually back into more artistic endeavors.
